A Japanese-led convoy with Marines from Task Force Fuji, based out of Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, Japan, will arrive at Yamagata Airport today after departing yesterday to provide support to the humanitarian assistance operations.

“We have been working closely with our Japan Ground Self Defense Force counterparts throughout this operation, and they have been particularly helpful in refueling, and providing food and accommodations,” said Col. Craig S. Kozeniesky, commanding officer of CATC Camp Fuji. “We are looking forward to joining the relief efforts.”

Humanitarian Assistance Survey Teams continued their work today and are deploying Marines from Yamagata Airport and Camp Sendai to survey disaster-stricken areas and distribute supplies.

The Forward Area Refueling Point, established by Marines from 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III MEF at Yamagata Airport, has greatly increased military aircraft capabilities by locating vital fuel resources at forward locations.

Two KC-130J aircraft from Marine Air Group 36, 1st MAW departed from Marine Corps Air Station Futenma today. The aircraft were carrying personnel from III MEF, along with communications equipment, and other gear to be delivered on mainland Japan to areas needing support.

Marines and sailors from III MEF are actively providing support for foreign humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in mainland Japan. Currently, there are approximately 757 Marines, sailors, and civilians from III MEF and Marine Corps Bases Japan deployed in support of Operation Tomodachi. Marine KC-130J aircraft have flown 98 sorties to date for continued support to the mission.
