Guntenkyo views new Okinawa Orientation Overview

By III MEF Staff | III Marine Expeditionary Force | November 15, 2016

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP BUTLER, Okinawa – The Okinawa Area Coordinator for U.S. Forces, Japan, Lt. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, has invited the leaders of the Guntenkyo to view the updated Okinawa Orientation Overview presentation given to new military members, civilian employees, and family members on Nov. 16.

“We are at our best when we openly communicate, share ideas, and work with local leaders to prepare our Marines, Sailors, Airmen and Soldiers to be ambassadors and respectful members of the communities we share in Okinawa,” said Nicholson. “I look forward to sharing this brief with the representative leaders of Okinawa because our relationship with the local community is vital to our mutual success and security in the region.”

The purpose of the orientation training is to generally familiarize new service members and civilians with Okinawa’s unique history and culture, and make them better informed about the environment where they will live and work. The new training is given to all service members and civilians on Okinawa and contains important historical examples, statistics and case studies based on recommendations from the Okinawa Prefectural Government.

“We have worked hard to create an improved presentation that all the branches of the military can use to be more effective at building understanding within our shared communities” said Nicholson.

In the near future media will also be invited to a Newcomers Orientation Workshop to allow them to view the presentation personally.
