Lieutenant Colonel Bill DeLeal
Lieutenant Colonel Bill DeLeal is a native of Saint Louis, Missouri and a graduate of Washington University in Saint Louis (2002, BA International Studies), the Defense Language Institute (2011, French), and the Naval Postgraduate School (2011, MA National Security Affairs-Africa). He is a Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Intelligence Officer, Signals Intelligence Officer, Foreign Area Officer (Africa), and MAGTF Planner.
Enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1993, he completed a Fleet Marine Forces tour and a Marine Security Guard tour at US Embassies in Mozambique and Germany before being commissioned in 2002. He graduated at the top of his Basic School and MOS classes and was assigned to 2d Radio Battalion, Camp Lejeune as a Signals Intelligence Officer. As a lieutenant from 2004-2005, he served as Battalion Future Operations Officer and Executive Officer, Bravo Company while deployed to al-Anbar Province, Iraq in support of Regimental Combat Teams (RCT) 7 and 2 during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (OIF).
As a captain from 2006-2009, he deployed for a second OIF tour in al-Anbar Province, Iraq as Commander, Bravo Company in support of RCTs 7 and 2. He was the Officer Honor Graduate at the US Army Airborne Course before serving as Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, II Marine Expeditionary Force. Following this tour, he served as G-2 Operations Officer, 2d Marine Division and graduated from the MAGTF Intelligence Officer Course.
From 2009-2012, he completed Foreign Area Officer education in Monterey, California and was posted to the Office of Security Cooperation, US Embassy Senegal. In that capacity, he travelled extensively throughout the African continent in support of numerous Africa Partnership Station exercises, security cooperation initiatives, US Embassy engagements, and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-TRANSAHARA in West and North Africa.
As a major from 2012-2015, he served at 2d Intelligence Battalion, Camp Lejeune as the Intelligence Fusion Officer (Senior Intelligence Analyst), 2D Intelligence Battalion (FWD) in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Regional Command-Southwest during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. Following this deployment, he served as Commander, Echo Company, Battalion Future Operations Officer, and Battalion Operations Officer. During this tour, 2D Intelligence Battalion distinguished itself as the 2013 Marine Corps Intelligence Unit of the Year.
From 2015-2017, he graduated from both the Marine Corps Command and Staff College (with distinction) and the Marine Corps School of Advanced Warfighting. As a MAGTF Planner he served as the Plans and Policy Officer, US Marine Corps Forces Korea during periods of heightened tension in Northeast Asia from 2017-2019. He promoted to lieutenant colonel during this tour and assumed command of 3D Intelligence Battalion in June 2019.
LtCol DeLeal is the 2013 LtCol Michael D. Kuszewski Marine Corps Intelligence Officer of the Year. His personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two gold stars), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three gold stars), and the Good Conduct Medal.
He is married to Catherine and they have two daughters, Cecilia and Caroline.
