Sergeant Major Paul J. Hannaway
Sergeant Major of 3d Law Enforcement Battalion
Sergeant Major Hannaway was born on 25 May 1979 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 22 July 1997 and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Parris Island, South Carolina.
Sergeant Major Hannaway attended the School of Infantry (SOI), at Camp Geiger, North Carolina and received the MOS 0351, Assaultman. After graduation, Sergeant Major Hannaway reported to Basic Security Guard Course at Marine Corps Security Forces Training Company, Chesapeake, Virginia. Upon completion he received the additional MOS 8152. In January 1998, he was promoted to Private First Class. In April 1998, he received orders to Interim Marine Corps Security Force Company Bahrain. In September 1998, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He served as a designated marksman, corporal of the guard, and squad leader and participated in Operations Southern Watch, Desert Fox, and Desert Thunder.
In April 1999, Sergeant Major Hannaway reported to Small Craft Company, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In July 1999, he was promoted to Corporal. He graduated from the Special Operations Training Group Rigid Raiding Craft Course and Riverine Assault Craft Crewman Course where he received the additional MOS 0312 and 0314. In April 2001, he was promoted to Sergeant. He deployed to conduct riverine operations with Boat Platoon, Small Craft Company, in Argentina and Paraguay.
In June 2001, Sergeant Major Hannaway received orders to Marine Corps Security Forces Training Company for duty as a Physical Security and Tactics Instructor. In October 2003, he deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan to conduct a site security and threat assessment of the U.S. Embassy. During this tour, Sergeant Major Hannaway attended the Close Quarters Battle (CQB) Course, attained his Black Belt 1st Degree martial arts instructor status, and was recognized as a Security Forces Master Instructor.
In August 2004, Sergeant Major Hannaway received orders to Anti-Terrorism Battalion (AT Bn), Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In December 2005, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and attended Infantry Unit Leaders Course at Camp Geiger, North Carolina and was recognized as the Honor Graduate. He is also a graduate of the NCIS Protective Service Operations Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia. He served in two separate deployments for Operation Iraqi Freedom to Baghdad and was present during the unit’s transition and activation of 2nd Battalion 9th Marines.
In January 2008, Sergeant Major Hannaway received orders to Drill Instructor School Class 2-08, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California and was assigned to Hotel Company, 2d Recruit Training Battalion. He served as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Chief Drill Instructor. In March 2009, he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant. He graduated as the Honor Graduate from the Advanced Course at Camp Pendleton. In March 2010, he was transferred to Drill Instructor School where he served as the Drill Master and Chief Instructor for Drill Instructor School MCRD San Diego.
In April 2011, Sergeant Major Hannaway received orders to 2d Battalion 6th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as the Fox Company Gunnery Sergeant. He deployed with the battalion for Operation Enduring Freedom in Helmand Province Afghanistan. In August 2012, he was frocked to First Sergeant and served as the Fox Company First Sergeant.
In September 2012, Sergeant Major Hannaway received orders to the School of Infantry-East, Marine Combat Training Battalion, Company I, where he served as the Company First Sergeant. In November 2014, he received orders to Inspector - Instructor duty, Maintenance Services Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 25, New Haven, Connecticut. In June 2017, Sergeant Major Hannaway was frocked to the rank of Sergeant Major and received orders to 3d Law Enforcement Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
Sergeant Major Hannaway holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management and graduated Summa Cume Laude from Ashford University. He is also a graduate of the Marine Corps Senior Enlisted Professional Military Education Resident Course, Quantico, Virginia.
Sergeant Major Hannaway’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 gold stars in lieu of 4th award and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Sergeant Major Hannaway is married to Cheryll Hannaway and has three children: Trinity (13), Faith (10), and Paul (3).
