For the first time, more than 2,000 U.S. Marines joined with approximately 1,500 service members with the Japan Self-Defense Force to support the first iteration of Exercise Northern Viper 2017, at Misawa Air Base and the island of Hokkaido, Japan, August 10-28, 2017. Northern Viper, an annual joint contingency exercise, tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the JSDF and U.S. Marine Corps forces to work together across a variety of areas including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This exercise enhances and improves interoperability at the tactical level between the Marines and JSDF to keep the forces formidable and adaptive. NV17 showcases a highly-capable, forward-deployed U.S. military presence positioned with their Japanese partners to directly support the security of the Indo-Asia- Pacific region. Alfred A. Cunningham reported to the aviation camp at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. Starting with its first aircraft, the Curtiss C-3, Marine aviation has stayed at the forefront of cutting-edge technology with its newest aircraft, the F-35B Lightning II. Royal Thai, Republic of Korea and U.S. Marines helocast from an MV-22B Osprey Feb. 10, 2016 during Cobra Gold 16 in Thailand. This was one of the first times an Osprey has conducted helocasting. CG16 increases cooperation, interoperability and collaboration among partner nations in order to achieve effective solutions to common challenges

Using the MV-22 Osprey, infantry Marines rapidly inserted into the Jungle Warfare Training Center, Okinawa, Japan, Oct. 31, 2015, in a massive, regimental air assault during Blue Chromite 2016, which builds cohesion among elements of the Marines Air Ground Task Force. Blue Chromite is a large-scale, cost-effective on-island exercise led by 4th Marine regiment. The Marines, from Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Regiment, are currently assigned to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program.
