U.S. Marines with 3d Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, executes a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System rapid infiltration to Iwo To from Okinawa, Japan, as part of Exercise Noble Fury, Oct. 10, 2020. After traveling more than 800 miles aboard a KC-130J Super Hercules with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, the HIMARS swiftly debarked, moved to a firing point, and engaged utilizing targeting information coordinated while in flight. After successfully striking the simulated target, the Marines loaded the HIMARS back on the aircraft and prepared for the next mission. This operation demonstrated the ability of 3d Marine Division and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing to deploy long-range, precision-fires assets across a vast region in support of distributed operations in the littorals. For the first time, more than 2,000 U.S. Marines joined with approximately 1,500 service members with the Japan Self-Defense Force to support the first iteration of Exercise Northern Viper 2017, at Misawa Air Base and the island of Hokkaido, Japan, August 10-28, 2017. Northern Viper, an annual joint contingency exercise, tests the interoperability and bilateral capability of the JSDF and U.S. Marine Corps forces to work together across a variety of areas including peacekeeping operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. This exercise enhances and improves interoperability at the tactical level between the Marines and JSDF to keep the forces formidable and adaptive. A five-bay, two-story, medium girder bridge sits completely built after a day of hard work from the Marines of 9th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, during Blue Chromite 16 at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Oct. 30, 2015. According to Cpl. Cole G. White, the 9th ESB bridge master, this bridge will be the first five-bay bridge to ever be lifted on Okinawa, and the second in Marine Corps history. Blue Chromite is a large-scale amphibious exercise that draws primarily from III Marine Expeditionary Force’s training resources on Okinawa. The location of the training allows participating units to maintain a forward-deployed posture and eliminates the cost of traveling to train.
