Commanding Officer, 7th Communication Battalion
Lieutenant Colonel Grant Hertzog

Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog attended Missouri State University in December 2009 and was commissioned in January 2010 graduating from The Basic School in December 2010. Upon graduating from TBS, Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog attended the Basic Communications Officer Course (BCOC) and was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 26.

From 2011 - 2014, he served as the Marine Aircraft Group 26 S6 officer with a one-year Individual Augment deployment to Afghanistan from 2012 - 2013 as an advisor to the Afghan National Army on Security Forces Advisory and Assistance Team 2-2-215.

From 2014 - 2017, he served in multiple roles at Communication Training Battalion: Basic Communication Officer Course Faculty Advisor, Assistant Course Director and Course Director of Advanced Communications Officers Course, and as Headquarters Company Commander.

In 2016, Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog was selected to attend resident Expeditionary Warfare School for the Academic Year 2017 - 2018. Upon graduating EWS, Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog served as the Operations Officer for Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division from May 2018 to May 2019.

In May 2019, Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog transferred to 5th Marine Regiment and assumed the duties of Regimental S-6 Officer. In 2020, Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog was selected to attend Resident Command and Staff College during the Academic Year 2021 – 2022.

In June 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog checked into Expeditionary Warfare school where he served two years as a faculty advisor and on year as the MAGTF Ops Ashore Course Director. He has also served as the Communications Occupational Field Expansion Course Director for two years, and the Wargaming representative for two years.

After a successful tour at EWS, Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog checked into Capabilities Development Directorate, where he currently serves as the Enterprise Services Branch Head under Command Element Information Division.

Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance with an emphasis in Real Estate from Missouri State University and a Master’s in Military Studies Degree from the Marine Corps University.

Throughout his time in the Marine Corps, he has completed non-resident and resident for both EWS and CSC, Weapons Tactics and Instructor Course, Space Operations Course, MAGTF Information Officers Practitioners Course, and MAGTF Communications Planner Course.

Lieutenant Colonel Hertzog’s personal awards included a Meritorious Service Medal with a gold star, a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and a Combat Action Ribbon.
