U.S. Marines with 3d Marine Littoral Regiment, 3d Marine Division, participate in exercise Bougainville II across the island of Oahu, Hawaii, Oct. 25 to Nov 5, 2022. Bougainville II is a field exercise that allows the MLR and its subordinate units to conduct expeditionary advanced base operations across the island of Oahu. U.S. Marine Corps explosive ordnance disposal technicians with 3d Littoral Logistics Battalion, 3d Marine Littoral Regiment, 3d Marine Division, conduct a joint full spectrum exercise at Marine Corps Base Hawaii from Sept. 20-25, 2022. EOD technicians around the joint force conducted a week long joint-service level exercise where service members cohesively integrated, trained, and competed with one another while utilizing experimental technology. U.S. Marines with 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d Marine Division complete a six-month deployment under 4th Marines in Okinawa, Japan, as a part of the Unit Deployment Program. Forward-deployed within the first island chain, 1/3 conducted a series of combat rehearsals, preparing to fight and win alongside their allies and partners, and to deter and defeat any threat to regional security. 1/3 will transition to the 3d Littoral Combat Team on June 23, 2022. The 3d Marine Littoral Regiment conducted its inaugural deployment to the Western Pacific in support of exercise Balikatan 22 from March 28 – April 8, 2022. Balikatan is an annual exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. military designed to strengthen bilateral interoperability, capabilities, trust, and cooperation built over decades of shared experiences. Balikatan, Tagalog for ‘shoulder-to-shoulder,’ is a longstanding bilateral exercise between the Philippines and the United States highlighting the deep-rooted partnership between both countries. U.S. Marines with 3d Marines redesignate to become the 3d Marine Littoral Regiment aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, March 3, 2022. The 3d Marine Littoral Regiment will serve as a key enabler for joint, allied, and partnered forces, will integrate with naval forces, and will enable multi-domain maneuver and fires within contested spaces. The transition of 3d Marines to 3d MLR is in accordance with Force Design 2030 and one of the first major steps to facilitating a shift as the Marine Corps divests in legacy capabilities and builds a force that is optimized for operations envisioned within the Commandant’s Planning Guidance.
