U.S. Marines and Sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) conduct a long-range non-combatant evacuation operation (NEO) at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. Marines may conduct a NEO at the request of the U.S. Department of State to evacuate U.S. citizens and other designated personnel. The operation was part of Certification Exercise (CERTEX) during which members of Special Operations Training Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, evaluate the 31st MEU as it conducts it’s mission essential tasks in a variety of scenarios.
