Hijiki, Harvesting a Tradition

Okinawa residents harvest “hijiki,” a type of seaweed, during the first day of the Hijiki Harvest March 4 at Camp Courtney, Okinawa. The first day of this year’s harvest drew more than 250 residents. Hijiki is nutrient-dense and rich with iron. Many residents look forward to the Courtney harvest because hijiki is scarce in other areas of Okinawa due to overharvesting.

Balikatan 2019: Balikatan 19 humanitarian social media video

The Armed Forces of the Philippines, U.S. military, and the Australian Defence Force conduct numerous humanitarian projects throughout the Philippines. These projects are done with the combined efforts of the AFP, U.S. military, and the ADF as part of Exercise Balikatan 2019. Balikatan is an annual military training exercise hosted by the Philippines between the AFP and U.S. military designed to build U.S. and Philippine defense readiness while strengthening multinational relationships.

31st MEU Marines engage with local Hawaiian community

Marines with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit's Maritime Raid Force host a community engagement event at Naval Air Museum Barbers Point, Kapolei, Hawaii, Jan. 19, 2019. The event gave the Marines of the MRF the opportunity to build a relationship with the community. There were static displays of the Marines and their gear, a breaching display and a tactical demonstration of a high value target interdiction. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
