Sgt. Arthur Whittaker and Staff Sgt. Nathanial Clark were recognized and awarded for their selfless acts of care during an awards ceremony, Dec. 14, 2017, at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. On their way to Guam, the Marines attended to an elderly man who was traveling alone and appeared to be disoriented. Whittaker and Clark spent the rest of the seven hour flight caring for him. Whittaker, a native of Fredericksburg, Virginia, is an electrical optical ordnance technician with Combat Logistics Battalion 3, 3d Marine Logistics Group. Clark, a native of Lakeville, Minnesota, is a ground communication maintenance technician with Combat Logistics Battalion 3, 3d Marine Logistics Group. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Pfc. Expeditionary Operations Training Group conducted a final certification exercise, March 21- 28, 2017, in Okinawa, Japan, to evaluate the readiness of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Company B, Marine Corps Security Force Regiment, to support the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet. U.S. Marines and Sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) conduct a long-range non-combatant evacuation operation (NEO) at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. Marines may conduct a NEO at the request of the U.S. Department of State to evacuate U.S. citizens and other designated personnel. The operation was part of Certification Exercise (CERTEX) during which members of Special Operations Training Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, evaluate the 31st MEU as it conducts it’s mission essential tasks in a variety of scenarios. Marines with the Force Reconnaissance Platoon, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, rehearse a visit, board, search, seizure operation aboard the USNS Matthew C. Perry as part of the MEU’s certification exercise. After clearing the deck and inside of the ship, the Marines detained the hostile personnel who took control of the ship, egressing to the USS Essex following the exercise.
